Ouf, le LuxFilmFest 2024 est terminé et TERRESTRIAL VERSES a été plébiscité aussi bien par le jury international que par le jury Fipresci, ce qui n’est jamais arrivé. La nuit dernière,  les Oscars ont récompensé les films et les personnes les plus méritantes, et nous sommes particulièrement heureux que – outre les 7 figurines pour OPPENHEIMER – le formidable THE ZONE OF INTEREST ait été consacré Meilleur Film Étranger, et que Hayao Miyazaki ait été récompensé pour son somptueux THE BOY AND THE HERON. Soit dit en passant,  “Oppenheimer” et “The Boy and the Heron” étaient dans notre Top 5 pour 2023 et actuellement, “The Zone of Interest” se retrouve tout en haut de nos Tops pour 2024.  

Pami les nouveautés de la semaine, nous vous recommandons chaudement le drame allemand DAS LEHERZIMMER qui – amis francophones – est sous-titré en français.

Finalement, un festival chassant l’autre’sachez que dès mercredi soir, la Spring Edition du BRITISH & IRISH FILM FESTIVAL lance ces premières séances.

Was im Lehrerzimmer passiert, bleibt im Lehrerzimmer”, sagt Carla Nowak in einem Interview mit der Schülerzeitung. Auch wenn das für die Lehrerin zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon nur noch reine Wunschvorstellung ist. Es ist ihre erste Stelle, engagiert unterrichtet sie Mathematik und Sport in der siebten Klasse. Es läuft gut, sie kann die Heranwachsenden motivieren. Als es in der Schule zu einer Reihe von Diebstählen kommt und bald einer ihrer Schüler verdächtigt wird, ist Carla empört und beschließt, der Sache selbst auf den Grund zu gehen. Doch der Fall lässt sich nicht so einfach lösen und zieht Kreise…

• Es ist in den vergangenen Jahren nicht besonders oft vorgekommen, dass wir uns für einen deutschen Film besonders begeisterten, umso mehr freuen wir uns über den Umstand, dass Ilker Çataks DAS LEHRERZIMMER uns vom Stuhl gerissen hat. Der Regisseur erzählt sein aufreibendes Schuldrama in bester Hitchcock-Manier, obwohl die Thematik mit Hitchcock nicht das Geringste am Hut hat. Schade nur, dass es über ein Jahr gedauert hat – der Film lief bei der Berlinale 2023 – bis er endlich nach Luxemburg kommt. Allerdings bedeutet das auch, dass der Film französiche Untertitel hat, was ihn dem frankophonen Publkum zugänglich macht. Vier Sterne und eben so viele Ausrufezeichen. (jpt) 
• İlker Çatak entgeht in seinem exzellent beobachteten Film nichts. Schonungslos inszeniert er die Schule als Mikrokosmos, in dem es kein Außerhalb mehr gibt und nichts privat bleibt. Das Lehrerzimmer ist eine Studie über Machtverhältnisse und darüber, wie Einzelne zwischen verhärteten Fronten aufgerieben werden. (Berlinale Katalog 2023) 

WICKED LITTLE LETTERS

Littlehampton, 1920. Lorsque Edith Swan commence à recevoir des lettres anonymes truffées d’injures, Rose Gooding, sa voisine irlandaise à l’esprit libre et au langage fleuri, est rapidement accusée des crimes. Toute la petite ville, concernée par cette affaire, s’en mêle. L’officière de police Gladys Moss, rapidement suivie par les femmes de la ville, mène alors sa propre enquête : elles soupçonnent que quelque chose cloche et que Rose pourrait ne pas être la véritable coupable, victime des mœurs abusives de son époque…

• Wicked Little Letters swerves between comedy and tragedy without ever hitting its stride. The movie is at its best when it doesn’t strain to turn every moment into a joke, instead letting the story breathe a bit. Colman and Buckley are typically strong, while Vasan delivers her lines in a hilarious deadpan, reminiscent of her work on We Are Lady Parts. (The Hollywood Reporter) 
• A bawdy black comedy that isn’t nearly as “outrageous” as it would have you believe, “Wicked Little Letters” offers a tongue-in-cheek retelling of those events for the Merchant Ivory set. Titillating profanity aside, it’s a relatively tame critique of 1920s gender dynamics, focusing on the two women at the center of the affair — a sour-puss spinster named Edith Swan, who received the bulk of the harassment, and her disruptive Irish neighbor, Rose Gooding, whom she accused of sending the raunchy missives — as well as the female detective responsible for untangling the mystery. THE IRON CLAW

Forcé d’abandonner son rêve de mener une carrière de footballeur, Fritz Von Erich s’est tourné vers la lutte. Pour cet homme qui place l’effort et la détermination au rang de valeurs cardinales, le succès se mesure à la capacité d’atteindre le Championnat du monde des poids lourds. Aussi en fait-il une règle d’or en entraînant ses fils, Kevin, David et Michael, afin qu’ils marchent sur ses traces. Des trois, Kevin, champion de l’État du Texas, est celui qui possède les meilleures qualités physiques pour aspirer à terrasser le tenant du titre mondial. Lorsque le boycottage des Jeux olympiques de Moscou par les Américains ramène Kerry, l’aîné, un spécialiste du lancer du disque, parmi les siens, la fratrie est réunie et Fritz peut enfin la contrôler à sa guise… (Synopsis: Régie du Cinéma Québec)

All of which makes “The Iron Claw,” a true-life wrestling saga set in the late ’70s and early ’80s, with an ensemble cast featuring Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White, a perfect movie for this moment. The writer-director, Sean Durkin (who made the chilling cult drama “Martha Marcy May Marlene” a dozen years ago and then slipped under the radar), tells the story of the Von Erich family, a dynasty of wrestlers from Texas who won championships, found enormous popularity, and put their stamp on a sport that was only then establishing its larger-than-life imprint. (…) “The Iron Claw” has a more convincing period atmosphere than “The Holdovers,” it showcases the media theatrics of wrestling with an eerie unironic innocence, and the entire cast is superb. White’s role is a bit underwritten, but he uses his hangdog handsomeness to suggest muffled demons. Harris Dickinson, who played the model/influencer in “Triangle of Sadness,” makes as convincing a Texas hippie as anyone in “Dazed and Confused,” and Lily James, as the girlfriend Kevin marries, is the soul of hardheaded devotion. But in the end it’s Zac Efron’s movie. He plays Kevin as a moving simpleton with hidden depths, a fellow of such decency that the one thing he won’t do is disobey. He’s the film’s Cringing Bull. Adaptation d’un livre de Geert Taghon, très inspiré par son expérience d travailleur social, qui se penche sur le destin d’une famille pour le moins dysfonctionnelle, dont le quotidien est marqué par l’alcool, le sexe et la violence. Leur vie est vue à travers les yeux du jeune héros, Liam, adolescent délaissé, qui après avoir passé des années enfermé dans un sous-sol humide à regarder inlassablement le même film et être harcelé à l’école, atterrit dans un centre fermé où il tente de trouver du réconfort auprès de ses camarades, et des chevaux…

• There’s an urgency to the film that adds to the closing sense of nausea, and by the time the film closes, it ends on just the right note. What’s more, the film draws into the fractured male psyche, which is rare to see these days. There are shocks, but nothing anybody above the age of sixteen can’t handle. Mortier is particularly good on the sense of place: the wooden houses, grey-buildings, the rusted gates. Each of these tiny details makes for a compelling and deeply watchable whole.
