Marlon Brando et THE WILD ONE (1953) continuent de faire des petits, puisque cette semaine festive voit la sortie de THE BIKERIDERS de Jeff Nichols, avec Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy et toute un série de Harley Davidson. Mais les vedettes incontestée de la programmation sont les émotions en folie dans INSIDE OUT 2 de Kelsey Mann/Pixar, qui a pulvérisé le box-office américain avec 155 millions de dollars de recettes, le premier weekend. Mais ce n’es taps tout: THE NEW BOY *** de Warwick Thornton, avec Cate Blanchett, UN AMOR d’Isabel Coixet et THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER de Neil Burger, avec Daisy Ridley, viennent compléter un tableau de chasse exceptionnel.  Feu d’artifice garanti !

INSIDE OUT 2

Nouvelle plongée dans l’esprit de Riley, désormais adolescente, au moment ou le quartier général subit une démolition générale  pour faire place de nouvelles emotions ! Joie, Tristesse, Colère, Peur et Dégoût, qui ont longtemps mené les opérations avec succès, ne savent pas trop comment se sentir lorsque Anxieté, Envie, Ennui et Embarras font leur irruption…

• “Inside Out,” I would argue, was the last great Pixar movie. I loved “Toy Story 4” (2019), and “Finding Dory” (2016) was irresistible in a way that evoked the magic of “Finding Nemo,” but “Inside Out,” released in 2015, was arguably the last film to be worthy of the Pixar name at its visionary, eyeball-tickling, head-spinning peak. It had the audacity to build an entire world inside the mind of Riley, and to turn that world — the warring emotions, the good and bad memories stored in collectible marbles — into a kind of enchanted philosophical amusement park. “Inside Out” was bedazzling entertainment, yet the movie went deeper than that. (…) “Inside Out 2” can’t shock us with its out-of-the-box imaginative daring the way “Inside Out” did. But the film’s director, Pixar animation veteran Kelsey Mann (making his feature filmmaking debut), and the screenwriters, Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein, build on the earlier film’s playful brilliance and come about as close as we could have hoped for to matching it. THE BIKERIDERS

• Don’t let the word “bike” fool you. In Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders,” the wheels in question are choppers — good, all-American motorcycles, built from the ground up by tough guys in leather jackets — and the “club” they’re a part of is really more of a gang. Nichols hails from the Heartland (from Little Rock, Ark., to be precise) and has a better handle on the life and attitudes one finds in so-called flyover country than nearly all the directors working at his level. You’ve probably seen a few of his films, most of which take place down dirt roads in rural areas. Movies like “Shotgun Stories,” “Loving” and “Mud.”  With “The Bikeriders,” Nichols brings us into the big city — or the outskirts, at least — and then zeroes in on a social microcosm all of us recognize, but few have penetrated: a Chicago-area motorcycle club that calls itself the Vandals. The Vandals don’t really exist, but both the group and a number of its members — guys like Johnny (Tom Hardy), Benny (Austin Butler), Cal (Boyd Holbrook), Zipco (Michael Shannon) and Cockroach (Emory Cohen), who eats bugs — were directly inspired by Danny Lyon’s 1968 photo collection “The Bikeriders,” a thin book of fewer than 100 pages whose iconic black-and-white images serve as the raw material for Nichols’ full-color imagination. (Peter Debruge/Variety) 

THE NEW BOY ***

Les années 1940, en Australie. Un garçon orphelin aborigène de neuf ans arrive au milieu de la nuit dans un monastère éloigné dirigé par une religieuse renégate. La présence du “New Boy” va perturber le monde délicatement équilibré dans cette histoire de lutte spirituelle et du coût de la survie…

• Inspired by Thornton’s own experience of growing up as an Aboriginal boy in a Christian boarding school, this is ambitious, tonally tricky filmmaking, bringing an unexpected dose of whimsy to social interests more austerely explored in Thornton’s excellent previous features “Samson and Delilah” and “Sweet Country.” Meandering but never uninvolving, the film benefits, like its predecessors, from its writer-director-cinematographer’s extraordinary eye for light and locale, which goes beyond dewy pictorialism to reclaim a landscape from its imposing occupiers. The film’s visual splendor, along with a ripely entertaining performance by producer Cate Blanchett (in a rare return to Australian features) as the orphanage’s offbeat abbess, represent its chief selling points to international distributors; in the title role, kinetic, wide-eyed novice Aswan Reid is its secret weapon. THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER

La vie idyllique d’Helena Petterier est mise à mal lorsqu’elle apprend que l’homme qui l’a élevée et gardée en otage pendant 12 ans dans un marécage s’est évadé de prison. Pour protéger son mari et sa fille, Helena va devoir affronter son sombre passé qu’elle a toujours gardé secret, et traquer son père, le tristement célèbre Roi des Marais….

• Based on nothing but its name, Neil Burger’s “The Marsh King’s Daughter” sounds like the first draft of a Shakespeare comedy or maybe a fantasy adventure about a princess who inherits a spirited wetland full of talking birds and bullfrogs. Indeed, the title first belonged to a Hans Christian Andersen story about a pair of talking storks who build their nest atop the home of a Viking warrior, and Burger’s movie — much like the 2017 Karen Dionne novel on which it’s based — re-uses it as part of a conscious effort to set fantastical expectations for what turns out to be a grounded (if somewhat dubious) psychological thriller.  (David Ehrlich/indiewire.com)

Natalia, la trentaine, se retire dans un village de la campagne espagnole pour échapper à un quotidien stressant. Elle se heurte à la méfiance des habitants, se lie d’amitié avec un chien, et accepte une troublante proposition de son voisin….

• C’est que dans Un amor, l’autrice du livre comme la réalisatrice de son adaptation cinématographique décrivent sans concession comme la société peut être oppressante, à tel point qu’elle tente d’arracher d’elle, par ses dynamiques hypocrites, ceux qui n’y adhèrent pas, comme le personnage de Laia Costa qui, dans ce village, se sent comme une intruse incomprise et très seule. Jusqu’à ce que la situation devienne insupportable et qu’elle recrache toute sa rage contenue, comme une chienne qui a reçu trop de coups de bâton, mais à qui il reste assez de force pour mordre ceux qui l’ont maltraitée.
