Petite semaine…avec seulement quatre nouveaux films, dont THE POPE’S EXORCIST en avant-première. Nous avons déjà vu et bien aimé EMILY *** de Frances O’Connor, TO LESLIE a valu une nomination aux Oscars à son actrice principale, Andrea Riseborough, tandis que SUZUME NO TOJIMARI devrait ravir les amateurs de mangas sur grand écran. Voilà, c’est tout, mais ce n’est pas rien !

Gravement malade, Emily Brontë, âgée de 30 ans, se souvient des événements qui ont marqué sa vie d’adulte. Après ses études scolaires, la jeune femme tombe sous le charme de son professeur de français, le vicaire William Weighman, et partage avec lui des moments d’intimité et d’extase érotique. Particulièrement sensible et vulnérable, elle est profondément bouleversée par sa rupture amoureuse, son échec dans sa tentative de devenir enseignante et le décès de son frère avec lequel elle maintient une relation privilégiée. Mal dans sa peau, en quête de liberté, elle écrit et publie son roman Les Hauts de Hurlevent. Le livre devient un succès et rend fiers les membres de son entourage.

• Frances O’Connor had her performing break back in 1999 playing Fanny in an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park, in which she famously went toe-to-toe on screen with Harold Pinter who was playing her uncle Sir Thomas Bertram. Now she has made a really impressive debut as a writer and director with this study of Emily Brontë, intelligently played by the Franco-British star Emma Mackey. It’s beautifully acted, lovingly shot, fervently and speculatively imagined, although Mackey’s portrayal, excellent as it is, may be smoother around the edges and less windblown than the real thing. THE POPE’S EXORCIST

Inspiré des archives du Père Gabriele Amorth, exorciste en chef du Vatican. Le Père Gabriele Amorth enquête suite à la découverte terrifiante d’un jeune garçon possédé. Ses investigations le mèneront à dévoiler une conspiration séculaire que le Vatican a désespérement tenté de maintenir dans l’oubli…

• In the face of it, “The Pope’s Exorcist” would have you believe that it’s rooted in the real-life experiences of the late Father Gabriele Amorth, the Catholic priest who served for 30 years as the head exorcist of the Diocese of Rome. Its screenwriting credits proclaim as much, for starters, while a surfeit of onscreen dates and locations in the early going lend proceedings the faintest of docudrama veneers; moreover, the film is backed by the non-profit production arm of the Jesuit research university Loyola Marymount, with Loyola rector Father Edward J. Siebert among its executive producers.                                                                                          The film’s devout faith in that formula largely protects it from significant scares or surprises, as a thin, by-the-numbers script from Michael Petroni (“The Rite”) and Evan Spiliotopoulos (“The Unholy”) adheres to expectations even before its characters set foot in the most plainly spooked Catholic abbey you ever did see. And yet “The Pope’s Exorcist” still exerts a lurid B-movie pull, in part because Australian genre stylist Avery demonstrates some command of fire-and-brimstone theatrics, but mostly thanks to Russell Crowe: As the film’s version of Father Amorth by way of Damien Karras, the slumming Oscar champ props up proceedings with just the right balance of gruff, paternalistic credibility and wry, self-mocking irony. TO LESLIE

Drame; Réalisateur: Michael Morris; avec Andrea Riseborough, Drew Youngblood, Tom Virtue; Scénariste: Ryan Binaco; Directeur/Photo: Larkin Seiple; Musique: Linda Perry; USA 2022, 119 minutes; Andrea Riseborough a été nommée pour l’Oscar de la meilleure actrice.

Leslie, mère célibataire texane, gagne à la loterie. Elle dilapide rapidement l’importante somme d’argent afin de débuter une nouvelle vie. Des années plus tard, usée par les aléas de la vie, elle tente de trouver la rédemption…

• To Leslie is a sad, sweet country song of a movie, with a steel-guitar twang of love and loss. Screenwriter Ryan Binaco was inspired by his own mother for this film, conjuring her memory in the spirit of Barbara Loden’s Wanda (1970) or maybe Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974). Better Call Saul producer Michael Morris makes his feature directing debut. The film is ultimately just a little contrived and its final scene is not entirely plausible, but the drama is always fiercely watchable due to an undoubtedly marvellous performance from Andrea Riseborough – who (…) put this little-seen indie picture back into the conversation and made industry headlines with her sensational outsider breakthrough into the Academy Awards best actress nomination list. SUZUME NO TOJIMARI

Manga, animatio numérique; Réalisateur, scénariste: Makoto Shinkai; avec les voix (v.o.) de Eri Fukatsu, Koshiro Matsumoto, Shôta Sometani; Japon 2023, 122 minutes.

Dans une petite ville paisible de Kyushu, une jeune fille de 17 ans, Suzume, rencontre un homme qui dit voyager afin de chercher une porte. Décidant de le suivre dans les montagnes, elle découvre une unique porte délabrée trônant au milieu des ruines, seul vestige ayant survécu au passage du temps. Cédant à une inexplicable impulsion, Suzume tourne la poignée, et d’autres portes s’ouvrent alors aux quatre coins du Japon, laissant entrer toutes les catastrophes qu’elles renferment. L’homme est formel : toute porte ouverte doit être fermée. Là où elle s’est égarée se trouvent les étoiles, le crépuscule et l’aube, une voûte céleste où tous les temps se confondent. Guidée par des portes nimbées de mystère, Suzume entame un périple en vue de toutes les refermer…
